وسام فيلدز (Fields Medal)، هي جائزة تُمنح لاثنين أو ثلاثة أو أربعة عالم رياضيات تحت سن 40 عاماً في المؤتمر الدولي التابع للاتحاد الدولي للرياضيات (IMU)، وهو مؤتمر يُعقد كل أربع سنوات. سُميت الجائزة تكريماً لعالم الرياضيات الكندي جون تشارلز فيلدز.[1] والغرض منها هو تقديم التقدير والدعم للباحثين الرياضيين الشباب الذين قدموا إسهامات كبيرة في مجال الرياضيات.

يُعتبر وسام فيلدز واحداً من أرفع الأوسمة التي يمكن أن يحصل عليها عالم الرياضيات، وفقاً للمسح السنوي للتميز الأكاديمي الذي يجريه التصنيف الأكاديمي لجامعات العالم،[2] وقد صُنف وسام فيلدز باعتباره "جائزة نوبل في الرياضيات".[3][4][5] في استطلاع تقييم آخر أجراه مرصد التصنيف الأكاديمي والتميز في الفترة 2013-2014، جاء وسام فيلدز مباشرة بعد جائزة آبل كثاني أكثر الجوائز الدولية شهرة في الرياضيات.[6][7]

مُنح الوسام لأول مرة عام 1936 لعالم الرياضيات الفنلندي لارس ألفورس وعالم الرياضيات الأمريكي جسي دوگلاس، ويُمنح كل أربع سنوات منذ عام 1950. وفي عام 2014، أصبحت عالمة الرياضيات الإيرانية مريم ميرزاخاني أول امرأة تفوز بوسام فيلدز.[8][9][10] باستثناء اثنين من حملة الدكتوراه في الفيزياء (إدوارد ويتن ومارتن هارير[11] لم يفز بالوسام إلا الأشخاص الحاصلون على درجة الدكتوراه في الرياضيات.[12] في المجمل، مُنح 68 شخصاً وسام فيلدز، اعتباراً من عام 2026.[13]

كان فيلدز له دور فعال في تأسيس الجائزة، حيث قام بتصميم الوسام بنفسه وقام بتمويل المكون المالي، على الرغم من أنه توفي قبل تأسيسها وأشرف على خطته جون لايتون سينج.[1] تشمل الجائزة مكافأة مالية، والتي تبلغ قيمتها منذ عام 2006 مبلغ 15.000 دولار كندي.[14][15]

شروط الحصول على الجائزة

يُعتبر وسام فيلدز على نطاق واسع واحداً من أرفع الجوائز في مجال الرياضيات، وغالباً ما يوصف بأنه "جائزة نوبل في الرياضيات".[16] ومع ذلك، على عكس جائزة نوبل، يُمنح وسام فيلدز مرة واحدة كل أربع سنوات ويتضمن قيوداً عمرية: يجب أن يكون عمر الفائزين أقل من 40 عاماً في 1 يناير من العام الذي يُمنح فيه الوسام.[17]

يعكس الحد الأقصى للعمر نية جون تشارلز فيلدز بأن الجائزة لا ينبغي أن تقتصر على تقدير الأعمال المتميزة المنجزة فحسب، بل يجب أن تشجع أيضاً على تحقيق المزيد من الإنجازات من قبل الحائزين عليها، وأن تحفز بذل المزيد من الجهد بين علماء الرياضيات الآخرين. إضافةً إلى ذلك، لا يجوز للفرد الحصول على ميدالية فيلدز إلا مرة واحدة، ولا يحق له الحصول على جوائز مستقبلية.[17]
