حافظت انتخابات نوفمبر 2016 على سيطرة الحزب الجمهوري على مجلسي النواب والشيوخ، لكن

تبعاً لدراسة عقدتها جورنال أوف پوليسز في 2018، فإن "السجل التشريعي للكونگرس رقم 115 كان أقل إثارة للإعجاب مع سيطرة أحزاب الأغلبية الأخيرة الأخرى على الحكومة الموحدة".[3] تزعم الدراسة أن هذا يعكس فقدان الحزب الجمهوري للوحدة الداخلية.[3]
