كتاب المورمون هي مسرحية موسيقية ساخرة دينية، قام بكتابتها هي وكلمات أغانيها وتلحين موسيقاها ترِيْ پاركر، روبرت لوپز، ومات ستون.[1] الذين اشتهروا لخلقهم كوميديا الرسوم المتحركة ساوث پارك، خلق پاركر وستون الموسيقى مع لوپيز، الذي شارك في كتابة وتلحين أڤنيو كيو. ويسخر العرض من الديانة المنظمة والمسرح الموسيقي التقليدي، عاكسةً اعجاب مبدعيه طوال حياتهم بالمورمونية والمسرحيات الموسيقية.[2]
كتاب المورمون يروي قصة مبشرَيْن شابين من المورمون أُرسِلا إلى قرية نائية في شمال اوغندا، حيث كان زعيم حرب وحشي يهدد الأهالي. وبسذاجة وتفاؤل، حاول المبشران أن يدعوَا إلى كتاب المورمون، أحد كتبهم المقدسة—والذي يعرفه جيداً أحدهما فقط—إلا أنه يتمكن من التواصل مع الأهالي، الذين هم مشغولون بأمور الحرب، المجاعة، الفقر والإيدز أكثر من انشغالهم بالدين (هاسا ديگا إيبووي).[3]
وبعد نحو سبع سنوات من التطوير، اُفتُتِح العرض في برودواي في مارس 2011. وقد حصل كتاب المورمون على ردود فعل إيجابية من النقاد وحصد العديد من جوائز المسرح، ومنها تسع جوائز توني، إحداهن كانت لأفضل مسرحية موسيقية وجائزة گرامي لأفضل ألبوم مسرحية موسيقية. وقد عُرض للبيع تسجيل للفريق الأصلي في برودواي في مايو 2011 وحقق أعلى نجاح في قوائم ألبومات فرق المسرحيات الموسيقية في برودواي على مدى أربعة عقود، ليصل إلى رقم 3 على قوائم بيل‌بورد.

الفصل الأول
في مركز تدريب المبشرين بكنيسة يسوع المسيح لقديسي اليوم الآخر في پروڤو، يوتا، يقود المبشر تحت التدريب المتدين الوسيم الشامخ، الأكبر كڤن پرايس، زملاءه في عرض لأسلوب الدعوة من باب إلى باب ليحول الأهالي إلى المورمونية ("Hello!"). أحد المبشرين، الأكبر أرنولد كننگهام، غير الواثق والبدين والمولع بالتكنولوجيا بعند، الذي يحاول جاهداً الالتحام بالجماهير، دون أمل في نجاحه. پرايس يعتقد أنه لو صلى بالقدر الكافي، فلسوف يُرسَل إلى اورلاندو، فلوريدا لبعثة السنتين الاجبارية، إلا أنه وكننگهام يُرسلا إلى اوغندا كثنائي ("Two By Two"). وبعد توديع أسرتيهما، يأخذ الأكبرين الطائرة من مطار مدينة سالت ليك. وكان پرايس واثقاً من أنه مُقدَّر له أن يقوم بعمل عظيم (على حد قوله)، بينما كننگهام كان سعيداً لأن يصاحب أعز أصدقائه — الذي لم يقابله إلا اليوم السابق ("أنت وأنا (ولكن غالباً أنا)").
وبمجرد وصلوهما لشمال اوغندا، تعرض الاثنين إلى السرقة تحت تهديد السلاح من جنود زعيم الحرب المحلي، الجنرال Butt-Fucking-Naked (في كناية إلى الشحصية الحقيقية الجنرال عاري المؤخرة General Butt Naked). مافالا هاتيمبي ومجموعة من القرويين يطلعونهما على واقع الحياة اليومية في الأحوال المزرية من المجاعة، الفقر والإيدز، تحت حكم زعيم قبيلة مستبد قاتل. ولكي يجعلوا حياتهم تبدو أفضل، يكرر الأهالي بصفة مستمرة العبارة "هاسا ديگا إيبوواي" ويغنونها على نغمات أغنية ملحنة حول العبارة ("هاسا ديگا إيبوواي"). ويشاركهم پرايس وكننگهام في إنشاد الأغنية، إلا أنهما يصابا بالذعر حين يعرفا أن "هاسا ديگا إيبوواي" ترجمتها هي "Fuck you, God" في الإنگليزية وأن القرويين يلفظون الكثير من التجديف في الذات الإلهية لمجرد الدعابة.
الفصل الثاني
كان كننگهام يفتقد المعرفة بكتاب مورمون، ولذلك فقد اختلق قصصاً بخلط ما يعرفه من تعاليم المورمون بشذرات من الخيال العلمي والأفكار الفولكلورية، والكثير منهم غير مستساغ ("مختلقاً أشياء"). إلا أن قصص كننگهام الابداعية كانت تتصل بمشاكل الأهالي في اوغندا التي تمزقها الحروب، مما جعل الأهالي يستمعون له. شعر كننگهام بالذنب لمطـِّه الحقيقة مع الأهالي، ولكنه برر ذلك: إذا كان ذلك لمساعدة الأهالي، فلايمكن أن تكون خطأ. وبينما كان يستعد للمغادرة، راجع پرايس ذنوبه التي ارتكبها في طفولته، ومنها إلصاق تهمة التهام قطعة حلوى بشقيقه جاك. وتذكر كوابيس نار جهنم التي كانت تأتيه في طفولته، فيصاب بالذعر حين يعاوده كابوس نار جهنم مرة أخرى ("Spooky Mormon Hell Dream").

Cunningham becomes depressed because he ended up causing more trouble for the villagers and feels he is a disappointment to the Church. However, Price has an epiphany and realizes Cunningham was right all along; though scriptures are important, what's more important is ensuring religion helps people. Price and Cunningham reconcile as they reassure each other they will remain in Africa and help the Ugandans together, because they are best friends ("أنت وأنا (ولكن في الأغلب أنا) [Reprise]").

The Book of Mormon contains many religious themes, most notably those of faith and doubt.[7] Although the musical satirizes organized religion and the literal credibility of the LDS Church, the Mormons in The Book of Mormon are portrayed as well-meaning and optimistic, if a little naive and un-worldly. In addition, the central theme that many religious stories are rigid, out of touch, and silly comes to the conclusion that, essentially, religion itself can do enormous good as long as it is taken metaphorically and not literally.[8] Matt Stone, one of the show's creators, described The Book of Mormon as "an atheist's love letter to religion."[9]
"The songs, often inspired lampoons of contemporary Broadway styles, are as catchy as they are clever";[10] "'I Believe' parodies The 'Sound of Music'’s 'I Have Confidence."[11] In the Broadway cast recording's liner notes, Frank Rich wrote that The Book of Mormon "scrupulously follows the old testament of Broadway circa 1945–1965, A.D., even while fondly spoofing it". He compares "I Believe” to “Climb Ev'ry Mountain” from The Sound of Music, the opening number "Hello!" to “The Telephone Hour” in Bye Bye Birdie, “Turn It Off” to “I’ll Never Be Jealous Again” from The Pajama Game, and reprise of "Orlando" harkens back to "Tomorrow" from Annie. Other parodies are "You And Me (But Mostly Me)," which is similar to The Wizard And I from Wicked, and "Sal Tlay Ka Siti," which contains musical references to Alan Menken ballads like "Somewhere That's Green" and "Part of Your World." Other songs, he writes, owe much to the parodies of Tom Lehrer.[12] In a series of interview segments for Broadway.com, Casey Nicholaw describes the scene of the Africans performing the "Joseph Smith, American Moses" pageant before the Mission President as a "total riff" of the Siamese performance of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" for the British envoy in The King and I.
The opening scenes of Act I and II of the musical parodies the Hill Cumorah Pageant.[13]

The response of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the musical has been described as "measured".[14] The church released an official response to inquiries regarding the musical, stating, "The production may attempt to entertain audiences for an evening, but the Book of Mormon as a volume of scripture will change people's lives forever by bringing them closer to Christ."[15] Michael Otterson, the head of Public Affairs for the church, followed on April 2011 with measured criticism. "Of course, parody isn't reality, and it's the very distortion that makes it appealing and often funny. The danger is not when people laugh but when they take it seriously—if they leave a theater believing that Mormons really do live in some kind of a surreal world of self-deception and illusion", Otterson wrote, outlining various humanitarian efforts achieved by Mormon missionaries in Africa in recent years.[16][17]
Stone and Parker were unsurprised by this response:
"The official church response was something along the lines of 'The Book of Mormon the musical might entertain you for a night, but the Book of Mormon,'—the book as scripture—'will change your life through Jesus.' Which we actually completely agree with. The Mormon church's response to this musical is almost like our Q.E.D. at the end of it. That's a cool, American response to a ribbing—a big musical that's done in their name. Before the church responded, a lot of people would ask us, 'Are you afraid of what the church would say?' And Trey and I were like, 'They're going to be cool.' And they were like, 'No, they're not. There are going to be protests.' And we were like, 'Nope, they're going to be cool.' We weren't that surprised by the church's response. We had faith in them."[18]
Mormons themselves have had varying responses to the musical. Richard Bushman, professor of Mormon studies, said of the musical, "Mormons experience the show like looking at themselves in a fun-house mirror. The reflection is hilarious but not really you. The nose is yours but swollen out of proportion."[19] Bushman said that the musical was not meant to explain Mormon belief, and that many of the ideas in Elder Price's "I Believe" (like Mormons getting their own planets, God living on a planet called Kolob, and changing his mind about black people), though having some roots in Mormon belief, are not doctrinally accurate.[19]
