الباسيلوسورس Basilosaurus ("ملك السحالي")، هو جنس من الحيتان القديمة كان يعيش منذ 34-40 مليون سنة في أواخر العصر الإيوسيني. أُكتشفت أول أحفورة من ب. ستويدسفي الولايات المتحدة وكان يعتقد أنه لنوع من الزواحف، لكن أكتشف لاحقاً أنها إحدى أنواع الثدييات البحرية. أراد ريتشارد اوين اعادة تسمية الأحفورة زيوگلودون ("yoked tooth")، لكن، لاحقاً، وحسب قواعد التصنيف، ظلت على حسب أول تسمية لها. عُثر على أحفورات ب. إيزيس في مصر والأردن.

النوع ب. ستويدس هو أحفورة ولائية في مسيسيپي وألاباما بالولايات المتحدة.

كان الباسيلوسورس يتغذى على الأسماك وحيتان الدوريودون الأصغر، وقد بلغ طول هذا الحوت 18 متر، وكان يسبح مثل الثعابين، وجدت حفريات تلك الحيتان على شكل حرف S ويرجع ذلك لأن عضلات عموده الفقري لم تكن قوية جداً كما أنها وجدت مقلوبة على ظهرها مما يرجح انها طفت بعد موتها واستقرت في هذا الوضع.

وقد اكتشف العالم بيدنل حفريات وادي الحيتان عام 1902 وما بين عامي 1983 و2007 قام العديد من علماء الحفريات المصريين والآمريكيين بتسع رحلات استكشافية، حدد خلالها فريق العمل ما يزيد عن 400 موقع حفري ما بين هياكل حيتان وعرائس البحر بوادي الحيتان وخلال عام 1989 تم اكتشاف أول أقدام وأرجل لحوت مائي.

اكتشافات حديثة

في 10 يونيو 2015، أكشفت في وادي الحيتان، بمصر، أحفورة لحوت من جنس بالسيلوسورس تغذى على حوت أصغر، ثم تغذى عليهما قرش ضخم. كان طول الحوت الثاني، أكثر من 18 متر، ويعتقد أنه أكبر الحيوانات البحرية التي كانت موجودة في أواخر العصر الإيوسيني، منذ ما يقارب من 35 مليون سنة مضت. تم العثور على بقايا الحوتين بالقرب من أسنان هذا القرش العملاق، مما يدل على أنه تغذى على الحوتين. وبالرغم من اكتشاف أحفورات 10 حيتان في منطقة وادي الحيتان، إلا أن هذا يعتبر أول كشف كامل للباسيلوسورس.
