الشرطة النيجيرية، هي قوات إنفاذ القانون الرئيسية ووكالة الأمن الرائدة في نيجيريا ويبلغ عدد مواظفيها 371,800 فرد.[2] وهناك خطط جارية الآن لزيادة عدد القوات إلى 650،000 فرد، حيث سيتم إضافة 280,000 فرد جدد إلى 370,000 الموجودين بالأساس. تعتبر قوة الشرطة النيجيرية مؤسسة كبيرة تتكون من 22 قيادة على مستوى الولايات موزعين على 12 منطقة و7 أجهزة إدارية.[3] يترأس الوكالة حاليا المفتش العام أدامو محمد.

فرقة مكافحة السرقة واحتجاجات 2020

في أكتوبر 2020، انطلقت حركة اجتماعية، إلغاء سارس، ضد قسوة الشرطة في نيجيريا. تدعو الحركة لإلغاء الفرقة الخاصة لمكافحة السرقة، وحدة مثيرة للجدل تابعة للشرطة النيجيرية لها سجل طويل من الانتهاكات.[5] بدأت الاحتجاجات كحملة على تويتر عام 2017 مستخدمة هاشتاگ #ENDSARS مطالبة الحكومة النيجيرية بإلغاء الفرقة.[6][7][8] بعد أن معاودتها النشاط في أكتوبر 2020، خرجت مظاهرات حاشدة بالمدن الكبرى في جميع أنحاء نيجيريا، وحقق الهاشتاگ 28 مليون تغريدة.[9] تشارك النيجيريون القصص والڤيديوهات التي تصور كيفية انتهاكات أفراد فرقة والتي تشمل الاختطاف، القتل، السرقة، الاغتصاب، التعذيب، الاعتقال خارج نطاق الاقنون، الإذلال، [[قتل خارج نطاق القانون|القتل خارج نطاق القانون]، والابتزاز في نيجيريا.[10] يُزعم أن ضباط سارس قاموا بتصنيف الشباب بناءً على اختياراتهم للموضة، وإقامة حواجز وعمليات تفتيش غير قانونية، وإجراء تفتيشات غير مبررة، والاعتقال بدون أمر قضائي، واغتصاب النساء وابتزاز الشباب النيجيريين الذين يقودون سيارات غريبة ويستخدمون آي فون.[11]

ويتظاهر آلاف النيجيريين في جميع أنحاء البلاد كل يوم منذ أوائل أكتوبر احتجاجاً على فرقة مكافحة السرقة الخاصة، التي تتهمها جماعات مدافعة عن حقوق الإنسان لسنوات بممارسة الابتزاز والمضايقة والتعذيب والقتل.
