كارسون، راشيل Rachel Carson (1907 - 1964م). عالمة أحياء بحرية وكاتبة علمية أمريكية، ألفت عدة كتب تعكس اهتمامها طوال حياتها بالحياة في البحار وسواحل البحار.

أكدت كارسون في كتبها العلاقة المتبادلة بين جميع الكائنات الحية واعتماد الرفاهية الإنسانية على العمليات الطبيعية. ويصف كتابها البحر حول الولايات المتحدة (1951م) كيمياء وجغرافية وتاريخ البحر. ولفت كتابها الربيع الصامت (1962م) انتباه الرأي العام إلى الاستخدام الضار والمدمر لمبيدات الآفات.

The Book-of-the-Month Club edition of Silent Spring, including an endorsement by William O. Douglas, had a first print run of 150,000 copies, two-and-a-half times the combined size of the two conventional printings of the initial release

وحذرت كارسون من أن المبيدات تسمم المخزون الغذائي للحيوانات، وتقتل أعدادًا كبيرة من الطيور والأسماك، وأشارت أيضًا إلى أن المبيدات يمكن أن تلوِّث مصادر غذاء الإنسان أيضًا. وأسهمت أفكار كارسون في وضع قيود على استخدام المبيدات في العديد من أجزاء العالم.

ولدت راشيل لويز كارسون في سبرينج ديل بولاية بنسلفانيا، وتخرجت في كلية بنسلفانيا للنساء في عام 1929م، وحصلت على درجة الماجستير من جامعة جونز هوبكنز في عام 1932م، وعملت في هيئة الأسماك والحياة الفطرية الأمريكية لوقت طويل من حياتها.
