- December 15 - Byzantine Emperor Basil II ("Bulgar Slayer") dies in Constantinople after a 50-year reign. Never married, he is succeeded by his brother and co-emperor Constantine VIII who becomes sole ruler of the Byzantine Empire. Constantine calls the Sicilian invasion off. Catapan Basil Boioannes diverts the Byzantine expeditionary force already assembled on Calabria to join the siege of Capua.

- 29 أبريل - interview between Mahmoud de Ghaznî and the Qarakhanide Yusuf Qadir Khan, king of Kashgar , near Samarkand ; they agree to share the Transoxiane . The khan Qarakhanide of Bukhara Alitigin is defeated by Mahmûd who enters Samarqand, but after the departure of the sultan, Alitigin recovers Bukhara and Samarqand (1026). Arslan-Israïl, son of Seldjouk, ally of Alitigin, is defeated and captured by Mahmoud de Ghaznî 2 . His troops, deported to Khorasan , enlisted with the wrens ofAzerbaijan against the Armenians of Ani and the Byzantines. The Seldjoukids Tchagri-Beg (tr) and Toghrul-Beg , grandsons of Seldjouk, then left their bases in Khârezm and advanced towards Khorassan ( 1038 ).
