Calaveras هي كلمة اسبانية تعني "جماجم"؛ ويقال أن المقاطعة مسماة بهذا الاسم لكثرة رفات الأمريكان الأصليين التي اكتشفها المستكشف الاسباني الكاپتن گابرييل موراگا.
