Economy

Small businesses are seen at the intersection of Main and Gabilan Streetsin Downtown Salinas.
The headquarters of Taylor Farms in Downtown Salinas, was constructed in 2015.

Major employers in Salinas include Taylor Farms, Tanimura & Antle, Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, Natividad Medical Center, Mann Packing, Hilltown Packing, Newstar Fresh Foods, Matsui Nursery and Monterey County.[21]

In popular culture

  • Marilyn Monroe, actress and Twentieth Century Fox starlet, was honored as the Diamond Queen of Salinas on February 20, 1948.[22]
  • Salinas is mentioned in various John Steinbeck novels, and is the setting of his monumental novel East of Eden.[23]
  • Salinas is mentioned in Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee" [[2]]. "One day up near Salinas, snowed" (yes it has snowed in Salinas but it is very rare), (this line follows the "in all kinds of weather" line in the song) she let Bobby slip away.
  • James Dean was on his way to Salinas when a car accident took his life.
