جون نيكولاس ماو John Nicholas Maw (م. 5 نوفمبر 1935 - و. 19 مايو 2009) مؤلف موسيقي بريطاني.

مثل معاصريه البريطانيين پيتر ماكسويل ديڤس وهاريسون برت‌وسل استوعب نيكولاس ماو تراث التسلسل في الموسيقى ومع ذلك أقوى انتماء له كان بريق الحركة الرومانسية المتأخرة. التصالح بين هذه التاثيرات استغرق أعوام لتحقيقه لكن اصدر على الاقل عمل واحد له وضع هام. درس ماو في الأكاديمية الملكية للموسيقى في منتصف الخمسينات وعام 1958 أنتج أول مقطوعة هامة له "ليلية" كتبها بتوجيه من الكلاسيكي المجدد لنوكس بركلي وكان يدين كثيرا لبارتوك ونال بسبب المطقوعة منحة دراسية من الحكومة الفرنسية سمحت له الدراسة في باريس مع اثنين من أبرز المدرسين في عصره ماكس دونيش، أحد طلاب شونبرگ وناديا بولنجر. وتلا ذلك فترة من العقم الإبداعي حيث عمل ماو ككاتب ومدرس.

جاءت شهرته مع عمله "مشاهد وآريا" سنة 1962 وهو تلحين لنصوص من القرن ال12 لثلاثة أصوات سوبرانو والأوركسترا حيث نجد الثراء الذي يميز ريتشارد شترواس وشيء من المدرسة الفيناوية الثانية مجددا مع ثراء كروماتي. تطوير هذا المصطلح الجديد استغرق ال8 سنوات التالية وهي عملية تطور أشار لها ماو ب"ثاني تدريب لي". مع ذلك كان وقت مثمر حيث انتج ماو سلسلة أوبرات: "عرض الرجل الواحد" و"صوت الحب" و"صعود القمر". هذه مليئة بالموسيقى الغنائية كما جادلنا من قبل مع ذلك أوضح في تأثيرها والآن تكشف عن أثر ألبان بيرج الى جانب شتراوس وبريتن وولف وبرامز. لكن رغم جودتها اوبرات ماو تمتعت بنجاح محدود الذي نسبه البعض لجرأة بعض الكلمات التي شمل مثل طقوس جنسية للجنود البريطانيين في ايرلندا في القرن ال19.

في السبعينات طور ماو براعته في التزيع الاوركسترالي تمزج الالوان ودرجاتها بطريقة توضح الموسيقى حيث الموتيف اللحني يتضح مع دراما متصاعدة وحتى طولها أكبر. الفترة التي شهدت تأليف مقطوعة اوركسترالية كبيرة "الاوديسة" شهدت كذلك تحول ماو اكثر للمقامية الواضحة في لغته الموسيقية وهو ميل اكده "كونشرتو الكمان" الرومانسي لعام 1993. فاز تسجيل لهذا العمل بجائزة جرامي عام 2001، مما ساعد على تحسين صورة ماو لكن العام التالي العرض الاول لعمله "اختيار صوفي" في كوفنت جاردن وهو معالجة اوبرالية لرواية وليام ستيرون تسببت في اراء متباينة رغم ان سيمون راتل وصفها بانها اهم اوبرا في اخر خمسين عام.
