إندياناIndiana هي ولاية أمريكية، تقع في غربي وسط أمريكا، وتطل على البحيرات العظمى شمالا. تقع ولاية مشيگن إلى الشمال منها وولاية كنتكي جنوبها. وتتمتع إِنْدِيانَا بسهول واسعة وخصبة، تجعل منها ولاية رئيسية في مجال الزراعة. ولكن رغم ذلك فإن التصنيع هو المصدر الرئيسي لدخلها.

يُعد 98% من الناس في إنديانا من مواليد الولايات المتحدة. ونحو عُشر الذين وُلدوا في أَقطار أخرى جاءوا من ألمانيا. وتشمل الجماعات الأخرى التي وُلدت في أقطار أجنبية البريطانيين، والكنديين، والكوريين، والمكسيكيين، والبولنديين، واليوغوسلافيين.

وإنديانا بولس هي عاصمة الولاية وأكبر مدنها. وهي مركز صناعي وتجاري كبير. ويوجد في المدينة مُتحف كبير للأطفال. والحدث السنوي الأكثر شهرة في حياة المدينة هو سباق إنديانابولس الذي تشارك فيه 500 سيارة.

وربما كان أول أُناس سكنوا في إنديانا هم هنود ما قبل التاريخ، ويُطلق عليهم اسم بناة الهضاب. وعندما وصل المكتشف الفرنسي روبرت كافلييه، وسيير دي لاسال، إلى إنديانا في عام 1679، كان هناك بضع مئات من الهنود.وكان معظمهم ينتمي إلى قبيلة ميامي. واستوطنت قبائل أُخرى كثيرة هناك أثناء القرنين الثامن عشر والتاسع عشر الميلاديين.

ونافس التجار الفرنسيون والبريطانيون بعضهم بعضا منذ بداية تجارة الفراء مع الهنود في أوائل القرن الثامن عشر. وتخلت فرنسا عن الإقليم الهندي إلى بريطانيا في عام 1763، بعد سلسلة من الحروب. وسيطر المستعمرون على المنطقة أثناء الثورة الأمريكية (1775- 1783).

وأصبحت إنديانا ولاية في عام 1816. وتوسع اقتصادها في الخمسينيات من القرن التاسع عشر. واقتحمت السكك الحديدية الولاية، وبدأت المدن تنمو، وازدهرت الزراعة والصناعة.

وفي عام 1906م، بدأت شركة الفولاذ الأمريكية في تشييد مدينة گاري، وأنشأت فيها أكبر مصانعها للفولاذ. وفُتح ميناء إنديانا على بحيرة مشيگن في عام 1970م. ويقدم هذا الميناء خدماته إلى السفن عابرة المحيطات.

توجد في إِنْدِيَانَا ثلاث مناطق أرضية. وهي من الشمال إلى الجنوب: سهول البحيرات العظمى، سهول تيل، الجبال الجنوبية والأراضي المنخفضة.

وتشكل سهول البحيرات العُظمى في إنديانا الشمالية جزءًا من الأراضي الخصبة المنخفضة التي تقع على طول الجزء الأكبر من خط ساحل البحيرات. وتحد شواطئ بحيرة مشيگن كثبان رملية عظيمة في العديد من مقاطعات إنديانا. ويجري عبر هذه المنطقة الخط الفاصل الذي يمتد من الشرق إلى الغرب، ويفصل بين شبكتي نهري المسيسيبي وسانت لورنس.

وتُشكل سهول تيل في أواسط إنديانا جزءًا مما يُسمى حزام الذرة الشامية العظيم في الوسط الغربي للولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. وتشمل الجبال الجنوبية والأراضي المنخفضة في جنوبي وسط إنديانا، القسم الوحيد من الولاية الذي لم تصل إليه أَنهر الجليد القديمة. ونتيجة لذلك فإن هذه المنطقة هي أكثر أجزاء الولاية تلالاً. وتُوجد بها عدة سلاسل من التلال شديدة الانحدار، تحتضن في وسطها أراضٍ منخفضة. وفتحت بعض النهيرات التي تجري تحت الأرض تجاويف في ترسبات الحجارة الجيرية. ونتج عن ذلك الكثير من الكهوف الكبيرة ومن بينها كهف مارينجو، وكهف وياندوت.

Indiana State Quarter

وتستخدم الصناعة عددًا من عمال إنديانا يفوق ماتستخدمه النشاطات الإنتاجية كلها. وإنتاج المعادن الأولية هو النشاط الصناعي الرئيسي في إنديانا. وتنتج إنديانا من الفولاذ أكثر مما تنتج أية ولاية أخرى في الولايات المتحدة ويوجد في شمال غربي إنديانا العديد من مصانع الصُلب (الفولاذ). وتشمل منتجات إنديانا الصناعية الرئيسية الأخرى الأدوات المنزلية، وقطع غيار السيارات، والمستحضرات الصيدلانية.
