ملخص
الهجوم في يوليو 2012، قبيل أو بعيد تفجير خلية الأزمة الذي قتل فيه العماد المتقاعد حسن تركماني، (مساعد نائب رئيس الجمهورية، ورئيس خلية إدارة الأزمة (وزير الدفاع السابق)، والعماد داود راجحة، وزير الدفاع، والعماد آصف شوكت، نائب وزير الدفاع وزوج أخت بشار، ، وهشام بختيار رئيس مكتب الأمن القومي. وهو الهجوم الذي فتح معركة دمشق. لاحظ أن حمد بن جاسم يقول "بدأنا نسمع عن جبهة النصرة". جبهة النصرة بدأت بالظهور في أواخر 2011. لهذا من المستبعد أن حمد بن جاسم يتحدث عن 2013. كما أن بندر بن سلطان تولى إدارة المخابرات السعودية في يوليو 2012 وكلام حمد يوحي بأن وصول بندر إلى هذا المنصب هو النقطة التي بدأت تتفتق فيها خططه العبقرية.
اللقاء الذي يتحدث عنه حمد بن جاسم حصل قبل ذلك يوليو 2012. للتذكير مؤتمر جنيف الأول كان في أواخر يونيو 2012 وحضرته روسيا وتحدث عن انتقال سياسي وهذا ما فسره البعض في المنطقة بتخلي روسيا عن النظام السوري. وكذلك في تلك الفترة بدأ العميد مناف طلاس - قائد اللواء 105 بالحرس الجمهوري - الابتعاد عن النظام والقول بأن الحل الأمني/العسكري لن ينفع في ظل الأموال التي تدفعها السعودية. انشق مناف في الشهر التالي الذي شهد الانطلاقة الحقيقية لمعركة دمشق مع دخوات قوات للمعارضة السورية إلى أطراف المدينة.
الغوطة الشرقية التي كان فيها الثقل الأكبر للمعارضة حوصرت بالكامل اعتباراً من أبريل 2013. ذلك الشهر شهد إكمال تطويق الغوطة الشرقية بما فيها دوما بعدما سيطر الجيش السوري على منطقة العتيبة وبهذا منع انطلاق الهجمات باتجاه مدينة دمشق. لم يخرق هذا الحصار إلا في صيف 2015 - عندما حصل هجوم كبير نجح فيه جيش الإسلام بالتقدم باتجاه القصر الرئاسي في غرب العاصمة وسيطر على المقر السري لرئاسة أركان القوات المسلحة السورية. هذا الخرق كان القشة التي قصمت ظهر البعير وأيقن الروس معه أن النظام سيسقط ما لم يحصل تدخل كبير. أول تدخل قتالي روسي حصل عبر قوات خاصة للمشاركة في صد هذا الهجوم في أواخر أغسطس 2015 قبل وصول الطيران الحربي الروسي إلى قاعدة حميميم في الشهر التالي. بالمناسبة، الاتفاقية التي دخلت وفقها القوات الروسية إلى سورية وقعت في يوليو 2015 بالتزامن مع الخروقات التي حصلت في محيط دمشق وبعد تقدم المعارضة السورية في منطقة إدلب ومحيطها. التزامن في الخروقات على هذين المحورين كان نتيجة التنسيق السعودي التركي الذي بدأ منذ مطلع 2015. وكذلك يجب الإشارة للهجوم الكيماوي على غوطة دمشق في أغسطس 2013

- Rif Dimashq offensive (March–August 2013): Syrian Army captures the towns of Jdaidet al-Fadl, Jdeidit Artouz, Otaiba, Qaysa, Jarba, Harran Al-Awamid and Abadeh cutting the main rebel supply line into Damascus. Syrian Army surrounds the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta area, surrounds and partially advances into the rebel-held Qaboun, Barzeh and Jobar suburbs.
- Rif Dimashq offensive (September–November 2013): Syrian Army captures the towns of Shaba’a, Sheikh Omar, al-Thiabiya, Husseiniya, Bweida, Hatetat al-Turkman, Al-Sabinah.
- Battle of Al-Malihah: Syrian Army captures Al-Maliha after a four-month battle.
- Rif Dimashq offensive (August–November 2014): Syrian Army captures Heteta al-Jersh and Adra and recaptures al-Dukhaniyya and Kabbasa.
- Battle of Yarmouk Camp (2015): the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS or ISIL) invades Yarmouk Camp, with aid from al-Nusra Front, and manages to capture 95% of the camp on 7 April, before Syrian rebel groups and the Syrian Army launch a counterattack on 12 April to drive ISIL and al-Nusra Front out of the area.
