 نظرية الفرضية الكوكبية

قدم هو وزميله الفلكي الامريكي الآخر مولتون في بداية القرن العشرين فرضية تشمبرلين-مولتون الكويكبية Chamberlin-Moulton planetesimal hypothesis في تفسير نشوء الكواكب والتى تقول: باقتراب نجم من الشمس أثرت قوة جذبه عليها (أي الشمس) لتفصل منها أجزاء ثم تبرد وتكون الكواكب السيارة والكويكبات. وهي نظرية راجت لثلث قرن رغم تعارضها مع فرضية لاپلاس السديمية. ولكن ما دحضها عام 1940 هو مناقضتها للعزم الزاوي لكوكب المشتري.
