وليام دالرمپل William Dalrymple، FRSL FRAS (و. 20 مارس 1965 في اسكتلندة)، هو مؤرخ حاصل وكاتب أدب رحلات حاصل على العديد من الجوائز، وهو مذيع، نقاد، مؤرخ فني، ومراسل أجنبي ومشارك في ادارة مهرجان الأدب الآسيوي.

في 2018، حصل على وسام الرئيس من الأكاديمية البريطانية.[1] وثائقي تلفزيون بي بي سي عن رحلة حجه إلى منبع نهر گانگا، "جدائل شيڤا الملبدة Shiva's Matted Locks"، أحد ثلاث حلقات من مسلسلهِ 'رحلات هندية'، الذي كتبه وقدّمه دالرمپل، حاز جائزة گريرسون لأفضل مسلسل وثائقي في بافتا لسنة 2002.[2]

ولد وليام دالرمپل باسم وليام هاملتون دالرمپل للبارونت سير هيو هاملتون دالرمپل ، ابن عم الكاتبة المشهورة ڤرجينيا وولف. تلقى دالرمپل تعليمه في كلية أمبلفورث، يوركشاير الشمالية، وكلية ترينتي، جامعة كمبردج، حيث تخصص في دراسة التاريخ، وأصبح باحثاً. هو متزوج من الفنانة أوليڤيا فريزر ولهم ثلاثة أولاد.

إهتم دالرمپل بالهند والعالم الإسلامي وعادات المغول والمسيحية الشرقية. له ستة كتب فازت جميعا بجوائز أدبية مختلفة، أول ثلاث كتب جاءت في سياق ترحاله في منطقة الشرق الأوسط والهند وآسيا الوسطى. تأثر بكتاب عدة منهم روبرت بايرون، إريك نيوبي وبروس شاتوين.

مؤخرا قام داريمبل بنشر عدة مقالات عن جنوب آسيا وقصتان نالوا جوائز عن التفاعل بين الإنكليز والمغول ما بين القرن الثامن عشر ومنتصف القرن التاسع عشر، في القصتين الآخيرتين إستشهد وتأثر فيهما بأسلوب سرد التواريخ من السير ستيفن رون سيمان وسيمون تشاما.

مساهم منتظم في مجلة نيو يورك ريفيو أوف بوك وجريدة الجارديان والجريدة الأسبوعية ستاتس مان ومجلة زا نيو يوركر وكتب عدة مقالات لمجلة التايمز ومن بين مقالاته هذه مقال (حقيقة الإسلام) في العدد السنوى للمجلة عام 2004.

يقضى دالرمپل معظم أوقاته في مدينة نيودلهي بالهند ولكنه صيفا يكون في مدينة لندن، وهو الآن مرتبط بكتابة أربعة مجلدات عن تاريخ إمبراطورية المغول.

  • In Xanadu received the 1990 Yorkshire Post Best First Work Award and the Scottish Arts Council Spring Book Award.[6]
  • City of Djinns received the 1994 Thomas Cook Travel Book Award and the Sunday Times Young British Writer of the Year Award.[7]
  • From the Holy Mountain received the 1997 Scottish Arts Council Autumn Book Award.[8]
  • The Age of Kali (1998) won the 2005 French Prix d'Astrolabe.[9]
  • White Mughals: Love & Betrayal in Eighteenth-Century India (2002) won the 2001 Wolfson Prize for History.[10]
  • Dalrymple was awarded the Mungo Park Medal in 2002 by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society for his outstanding contribution to travel literature.[11]
  • The television series Stones of the Raj and Indian Journeys, which Dalrymple wrote and presented, won him the Grierson Award for Best Documentary Series at BAFTA in 2002.[12]
  • The Long Search, Dalrymple's BBC Radio 4 series on the history of British spirituality and mysticism, won the 2002 Sandford St. Martin Prize for Religious Broadcasting and was described by the judges as "thrilling in its brilliance...near perfect radio." [11]
  • White Mughals: Love & Betrayal in Eighteenth-Century India (2002) won the 2003 Scottish Book of the Year Prize.[13]
  • Dalrymple's article on madrasas of Pakistan was awarded the prize for Best Print Article of the Year at the 2005 FPA Media Awards.[14]
  • Dalrymple received the Sykes Medal in 2005 from the Royal Society for Asian Affairs for his contribution "to understanding (of) contemporary Islam." [15]
  • Dalrymple received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters, Honoris Causa, from the University of St. Andrews in 2006 "for his services to literature and international relations, to broadcasting and understanding." [16]
  • The Last Mughal won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize for History and Biography in February 2007.[17]
  • Dalrymple received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters, Honoris Causa, from the University of Lucknow in 2007 "for his outstanding contribution in literature and history." [18]
  • The Last Mughal won the 2007 Vodafone Crossword Book Award for best work in English non-fiction.[19]

  • Dalrymple received the 2008 Colonel James Tod Award given by the Maharana Mewar Foundation for achieving excellence in his field.[21]
