According to the 2017 revision of the World Population Prospects[1] the total population was 23,695,919 in 2016, compared to only 2 630 000 in 1950. The proportion of children below the age of 15 in 2010 was 40.9%, 55.3% was between 15 and 65 years of age, while 3.8% was 65 years or older .[2]

الجماعات العرقية
في البلاد أكثر من 60 قبيلة مختلفة الانتماء واللهجات، وذلك لأن الدول الاستعمارية قسمت إفريقيا، بحسب مصالحها، لا من حيث واقعها التاريخي والعرقي والديني، لذا يعاني ساحل العاج اليوم، كما هي حال كثير من الدول الإفريقية، من مشاكل قبلية وعرقية حادة.
في البلاد أربع مجموعات عرقية ولغوية أساسية، تنضم تحت لواء العائلة الزنجية الكونغولية، وتتمثل حسب معطيات سنة 2000 بالأعراق الآتية: قبائل الكوا Kwa، ويقدر عددهم بنحو 9 ملايين نسمة، وقبائل غور وعددهم نحو 3ملايين نسمة، وقبائل الماندي وعددهم أيضاً نحو 3 ملايين نسمة. يقدر عدد السكان اليوم بنحو 17مليوناً، والكثافة العامة 52 ن/كم2 إلا أنها مرتفعة 80ـ100 ن/كم2 في مراكز المدن والمناطق الزراعية، ومتوسطة في الشمال 30ـ40ن/كم2 وقليلة في الغابات الاستوائية 10ـ20ن/كم2.
كانت قبائل الكوا منتشرة في جميع أرجاء البلاد، إلا أن القبائل الشمالية من بوركينا فاسو ومالي دفعت بها جنوبا، فتوطن أغلبها في مناطق البحيرات الجنوبية (قبائل اللاغونات)، وبقي جزء منها في أواسط البلاد وامتزج مع القادمين، أما في غربي البلاد فتوطنت قبائل بيتي وغيري وغريبو، وسكنت قبائل غور الشمال السافاني، وأبرزها قبائل سينوفو ولوبي وموسي، وتوزعت قبيلة كولانغو في جميع أرجاء البلاد تقريباً، أما قبائل الماندي فانقسمت إلى مجموعتين: جنوبية تعيش شمالي النطاق الاستوائي، مثل دان وغورو، وشمالية (بامان، دويوولا، مانديكا) تعيش غربي البلاد، مجاورة أقرباءها في مالي، وتعيش قبيلة ديوولا في المدن كذلك مكونة مجموعات متماسكة مغلقة تقريباً.
سكان ساحل العاج من العناصر الزنجية بينهم أقلية من البيض، ويتكون السكان من عدد كبير من القبائل منها الباولي 23%، بيتي 18%، سينوفو 15%، مالينكي 11%، آخرون (منهم حوالي 200000 لبنانيين)
يدين 60% بالإسلام، و22% بالمسيحية، و18% بديانات تقليدية
في القسم الشمالي يسود الفولاني وجماعات من البربر والعرب، واللغة الرسمية هي الفرنسية، وتعلم العربية في المدارس الإسلامية في الشمال وتسود لهجات عديدة من أهمها لغة البمبارا.
سكان جمهورية ساحل العاج كافة من الأفارقة السود. وينقسم السكان إلى أربع فئات رئيسية وهي: مجموعة أكان وتعيش في القسم الجنوبي الشرقي، ومجموعة كرو وتقطن في القسم الجنوبي الغربي من البلاد، ومجموعة الماندينجو وتقطن في المنطقة الشمالية الغربية، ومجموعة الڤولتاوية وتقطن في المنطقة الشمالية الشرقية. وتتشكل هذه المجموعات الأربع الرئيسية من أناس تجمعوا في الأصل من مجموعات عديدة صغيرة. ويتحدث سكان جمهورية ساحل العاج بأكثر من ستين لغة.
يعمل معظم سكان ساحل العاج في الزراعة ويسكنون القرى الصغيرة، لكن الستينيات شهدت نزوح كثير من شبابهم إلى المدن بحثًا عن العمل. ويعيش معظم سكان القرى في مجمعات سكنية تتكون من مجموعات من الأكواخ، تختلف مساحة كل مجمع عن الآخر حسب اختلاف عدد أفراد الأسر التي تعيش به. وتُبنى الأكواخ من حوائط طينية، وتصنع سقوفها من المعدن. كما أن معظم الناس في المدن يعيشون في أكواخ من الطين، لكن عدداً قليلاً من الأفارقة الأثرياء (وتقريبًا كل المقيمين هناك من غير الأفارقة) يعيشون في بيوت أو شقق مبنية على الطراز الحديث.
Languages
French is the official language, while there are 60 living indigenous languages spoken in Ivory Coast. The Dioula dialect of Bambara is the most widely spoken one.[8] Other language groups include the Gur languages, the Senufo languages, the Kru languages (including the Bété languages, Dida, Nyabwa, Wè, and Western Krahn), and the Kwa languages (including Akan, Anyin, and Baoulé).[بحاجة لمصدر]

The economic development and relative prosperity of Ivory Coast fostered huge demographic shifts during the 20th century. "In 1922, an estimated 100,000 out of 1.6 million (or 6 percent) of people in Côte d'Ivoire were Muslims. By contrast, at independence (in 1960), their share of the population had increased rapidly, and Muslims were moving southward to the cocoa-producing areas and the southern cities. By 1998, [...], Muslims constituted a majority in the north of the country, and approximately 38.6 percent of the total population. This was a significantly larger population than the next largest religious group, Christians, who constituted approximately 29.1 percent of the total."[9] In earlier decades, this shift was mainly due to large-scale immigration from neighboring countries of the interior, that has been going on since colonial times and continued to be promoted during the Houphouet-Boigny era. Since the 1990s, the widening fertility gap between different religious groups has continued to tilt the demographic balance in favor of Muslims although immigration has become less important.[10]
