This template formats pronunciation respellings of English words. It hyphenates each value so it will represent a syllable, and formats stressed syllables, input in uppercase, with bold text. All text is in italics, and is wikilinked to the pronunciation key page.

How to use

On Wikipedia, respelling is most commonly used to clarify the pronunciation of a name or topic in the lead section or introductory paragraph. Per the Manual of Style, respelling should follow the International Phonetic Alphabet, and never be used in place of it. The template provides a link to the key so that readers may easily look up how to pronounce the word. For example:

  • Worcestershire ( /ˈwʊstərʃər/ WUUS-tər-shər) is a county located in central England.
'''Worcestershire''' ({{IPAc-en|ˈ|w|ʊ|s|t|ər|ʃ|ər}} {{respell|WUUS|tər|shər}}) is a county located in central [[England]].

Common practice is to put no punctuation except one space between the IPA and the respelling for clarity, as in:

Any parameter containing an underscore will not generate adjoining hyphens and instead turn the underscore into a space, allowing for denoting word boundaries, alternate pronunciations and affix ellipses:
