Usage

This template links to a variety of different case reports located on the Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII) website. You should look up the case you wish to cite on AustLII, then refer to the URL of the web page on which the case appears to fill in the information required by the template.

Templates

The template should be used as follows:

or

or

"SOURCE" is a code representing the court or tribunal (see the list below), "NUM" is the medium-neutral item number, and "YEAR" is the year in which the judgment or transcript was published.

Note: ensure that no spaces appear around the parameters, or the template will not work.

The deprecated CLR and hcatranscripts functions are supported for legacy reasons only and should no longer be used. Links generated by these functions lead to a search page on the AustLII site as the former URL schema which supported these functions no longer exists. Existing uses of these functions should be updated accordingly.

The template currently only handles cases decided by the above courts or reported by the above series of law reports. Please update the template if you wish to include additional courts, or leave a message on the talk page if you need help with this.

num Mandatory: the medium-neutral item number of the case.
year Mandatory: the year of the case.
Other information
pinpoint The page or paragraph number at which information or a quotation you are referring to appears, like this: "528", "p 528" or "para 25". When referring to a range of pages or paragraph numbers, separate the starting and ending numbers with an en dash like this: "528–530".
date The date that the case was decided. You may enter the date in any format accepted by the template date, such as "1 July 1983" or "1983-07-01". It will appear a day-month-year format.
parallelcite Parallel citations to the case. Separate the citations with commas, like this: "205 CLR 337, 176 ALR 644, 75 ALJR 277".
courtname The court that decided the case. The name of the court can be wikilinked, like this: "High Court".

To have the template automatically indicate the court and jurisdiction of a case, type "courtname=auto". For Privy Council decisions, to indicate the jurisdiction from which the case was appealed, use |juris= together with "|courtname=auto" (for example, |juris=Vic.); if the parameter is omitted, the template indicates "on appeal from Australia".

juris The jurisdiction that decided the case, such as "Australia" or "New South Wales". It is unnecessary to use this parameter if you are already using "|courtname=auto", unless you wish to specify the jurisdiction from which an appeal to the Privy Council originated: see |courtname=.
ref This is equivalent to the corresponding parameter in Citation Style 1 templates. Use |ref=short reference text to link a citation with the corresponding inline callout short reference text. Do not place quotes around the ref value. The values |ref=harv and |ref=none do not have any special meaning.

Editing the template

From time to time, new court identifiers are adopted, such as the new Administrative Review Tribunal which uses the identifier 'ARTA'. In such cases, the template will need to be updated to refer to the new identifier, to avoid the need to hardlink to the AustLII website. If you update the template, remember to update the /doc page to ensure the new entry is documented. There are two elements to the template: the URL resolver and the court name wikilink. If you are unsure or need help, please comment on the template's talk page.

URL resolver

In the vast majority of cases, the AustLII URL will be:

https://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/(something)/(year)/(num).html

For instance, in the case of Baumgarten and eSafety Commissioner (Guidance and Appeals Panel) [2025] ARTA 59, the URL is:

https://www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/cth/ARTA/2025/59.html

The portion we care about is cth/ARTA. To update the URL resolver, simply add a new entry in alphabetical order to the first list in the template, e.g.:

           |APO = cth/APO/
           |ARTA = cth/ARTA/
           |ATMO = cth/ATMO/

Note that if the URL breaks from the usual format above, a more extensive change to the template will be required, which should be discussed on the template's talk page.

Court name wikilink

If courtname=auto is set on a citation, a wikilink to the court page will be created. In the same way as above, a new entry must be added to the template, but this time to the second list. Using our same example:

       |APO = Australian Patent Office (
       |ARTA = Administrative Review Tribunal (
       |ATMO = Australian Trade Marks Office (
