جهاز بلاي ستيشن جاء ضمن حقبة أجهزة الألعاب المنزلية ذات قوة المعالجة 32 بت، وهو يعتمد على مشغل أقراص مدمجة لتشغيل ألعابه الخاصة، وكذلك لتشغيل الأقراص الموسيقية المدمجة (بعض النسخ سمحت بتشغيل أقراص الفيديو في سي دي).
