This template is used for inline help to explain parameters for the referendum pending with map, referendum approved with map and referendum rejected with map templates.

Use this and the other templates to create a standard format infobox for referendums that also display a map. Before the election use

{{Infobox Referendum pending with map}}.

Note that you can include the same parameters as below but with "0" values, so that the entry is already present and can be changed when results are available.

After the election, depending on the outcome, change the template name to either:

{{Infobox Referendum approved with map}}.

or

{{Infobox Referendum rejected with map}}.

Using these templates with the correct parameters makes it easy to produce a usable library of infoboxes which don't require much work to change the box values, but use a consistent format.

 Parameters

The parameters for all three of these associated templates are:

name = whatever the referendum is known as

title = whatever the referendum official title or description is known as

yes = number of yes votes

yepct = percentage of yes votes (don't include the % on the percentage number)

no = number of no votes

nopct = percentage of no votes, (don't include the % on the percentage number)

invalid = number of blank and invalidated votes

invalidpct = percentage of invalid votes (don't include the % on the percentage number)

total = total number of votes cast

turnoutpct = 'percentage of total voter turnout (don't include the % on the percentage number)

mapdivision = this text is appended to the "Election results by " reflect the area covered by the map (i.e. county, district, parish, state, etc.)

map = file or image name (will be sized to maintain box layout)'

notes = footnotes listing source of data, etc.

 Before the election

If you are adding an infobox on a referendum to an article prior to election is held, it is a best practice to begin by using the {{Infobox Referendum pending with map}} template. We will be using the results of Oregon Ballot Measure 57 held during the 2008 general election in these examples.

Prior to the election being held, using the following syntax:

...produces the infobox on the right. You can of course change any of the variables as needed to reflect current status prior to the election. This might include having the name be the legislative bill number before the referendum is assigned a measure number and placed on the ballot, or adding of modifying the "notes" section as needed.

Depending on where the election is held, there may not be the map image files for all the examples shown here. They can be produced downloading the Oregon maps here as a template by using the .svg files shown in these examples and edit them using an external application (See the setup instructions for more information)

 During election

Once the polls close on election day/evening, you can switch things such as the "map" variable graphic to one such as [[File:Oregon election results-PENDING.svg]] to show the results are not yet know.

Change the following variable:

 Once outcome is known

When the outcome is known, usually once the race has been called by the media, simply change the name of the template depending on the outcome.

Change:

to

{{Referendum approved with map}} — if approved by voters

or

{{Referendum rejected with map}} — if rejected by voters

This will reorder the reuslts putting the winning side on top and adding either the "yes" check mark or "no" x-mark. In our example, we changed the template name being used from "pending" to "approved" in the example shown on the right.

Once the results are final and now using the {{Infobox Referendum approved with map}} template (in this example, you may be using the "rejected" template name depending on the outcome of the election) you can change the following variable:

This will change the results to their final numbers, add the appropriate source footnote, and change the map to this image:

 Missing historical results

If the article the infobox is and already existing one, where the results are of a referendum or ballot measure form an election long concluded, but the source information to generate a results map have not yet been located, you can still use these templates, and if available, use (or create) an appropriate image file for the map variable that reflects that the information exists but has not yet been located by Wikipedia editors. The Oregon Ballot Measure 9 (1992) has example of an infobox using such a map file image which uses the image below.
