This list is numbered based on presidents elected after winning an Indian presidential election. The terms of Varahagiri Venkata Giri, M. Hidayatullah and B. D. Jatti, who served as acting president are therefore not numbered or counted as actual terms in office. The president of India does not represent any political party. The colors used in the table indicate the following:

محمد هداية الله Muhammad Hidayatullah.jpg 20 يوليو 1969 24 أغسطس 1969 مستقل عمل هداية الله في منصب كبير قضاة الهند، وهو حاصل على مرتبة الامبراطورية البريطانية.[12] He served as acting president until the election of Giri as the President of India.
4 ڤرهاگيري ڤنكاتا گيري VVGiri Portrait.JPG 24 أغسطس 1969 24 أغسطس 1974 مستقل Gopal Swarup Pathak Giri is the only person to have served as both an acting president and president of India. He is a recipient of the Bharat Ratna award, and has functioned as Indian Minister of Labour and High Commissioner to Ceylon (Sri Lanka).[13]
5 فخر الدين علي أحمد Dr fakhruddin ali ahmed.jpg 24 أغسطس 1974 11 فبراير 1977 حزب المؤتمر الهندي بساپا دناپا جتي Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed served as a Minister before being elected as president. He died in 1977 before his term of office ended, and is the second Indian president to have died during a term of office.[14]
بساپا دناپا جتي B D Jatti.jpg 11 فبراير 1977 25 يوليو 1977 مستقل Jatti was the vice president of India during Ahmed's term of office, and was sworn in as acting president upon Ahmed's death. He earlier functioned as the Chief Minister for the States of Mysore and Jamkhandi.[14][15]
6 نيلام سنجيڤا ردي Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy.jpg 25 يوليو 1977 25 يوليو 1982 حزب جانتا محمد هداية الله Reddy was the only non-Congress candidate to get elected from Andhra Pradesh.[16] He was unanimously elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha on March 26, 1977 and relinquished this office on July 13, 1977 to become the 9th President of India.
7 گياني زايل سنغ Zail Singh2.jpg 25 يوليو 1982 25 يوليو 1987 حزب المؤتمر الهندي راماسوامي ڤنكاتارامان In March 1972, Singh assumed the position of chief Minister of Punjab, and in 1980, he became Union Home Minister. In July 1982, he became the first Punjabi to become President of India.[17]
