قام الديمقراطيون بإعادة ترشيح فان بيورن للرئاسة . أما حزب الوجز فقد اختار وليام هنري هاريسون بكل الحرب مع الهنود وحرب عام 1812 . وكانت شعبيته في انتخابات عام 1836 ، وتدعيم بعض قادة الوجز له جعله يكسب الترشيح على كلي ، الذي كون أعداء كثيرين في الكونجرس بسبب مواقفه المتناقضة هناك ، وكان جون تايلور من الديمقراطيين المعارضين لجاكسون ، ولذلك انضم إلى حزب الوجز ، وأصبح من مؤيدي كلي وقد رشح لنيابة الرئيس . وقد فشل حزب الوجز في وضع برنامج واضح له ؛ نظرا للخلافات الشديدة داخل الحزب . لهذا انبثق حزب جديد معارض لنظام الرق سمي بـ (حزب الحرية) مرشحا جيمس جي بيرني للرئاسة ؛ ومن بعد ذلك أصبحت مسألة الرق مشكلة وطنية عامة في أمريكا ، وعلى هذا نجد إذن ثلاث منافسين للرئاسة : بيورن ، هاريسون ، بيرني .

مع أن المشاكل المالية أخذت جزءا كبيرا في الحملة الإنتخابية ؛ إلا أن شخصيات المرشحين هي التي سيطرت على هذه الحملة . لقد صور حزب الوجز بيورن على أنه (سياسي ضعيف) ، بينما أعطوا انطباعا للناخب بأن هاريسون رجل قوي وقاس يؤمن بأفكار الفلاح الغربي ، كما أنهم عزوا الأزمة الإقتصادية إلى بيورن . وهكذا ربح الوجز الحملة الإنتخابية بسهولة ، واستطاعوا السيطرة على الكونجرس ، ولكن هذا الإنتصار لم يدم طويلا ؛ لأن هاريسون توفي بعد شهر واحد من توليه الحكم وخلفه تايلور في الرئاسة . تايلور كان من المؤمنين بمبدأ (حق الولايات) ، وهكذا عارض كثيرا من التشريعات التي اقترحها حزب الوجز ، باستعماله حق النقض .

  President Martin Van Buren of نيويورك

Van Buren, the incumbent president, was re-nominated in Baltimore in May 1840. The party refused to re-nominate his sitting vice-president, Richard Mentor Johnson. In the electoral college, the Democratic vice-presidential votes were divided among Johnson, Littleton W. Tazewell, and James K. Polk.

During the Van Buren administration, the Anti-Masonic Party had continued to disintegrate, as its leaders moved one by one to the Whig party. Party leaders met in September 1837 in Washington, D.C., and agreed to maintain the party. The third Anti-Masonic Party National Convention was held in Philadelphia in November 1838. The delegates voted to nominate William Henry Harrison for president and Daniel Webster for vice-president.
