English: Steel fragments of high-explosive shells, dating from the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Found on the battlefield.

The original shape of the artillery shells before detonation can be made out e.g. the smaller fragment on the right came from the nose of the shell, and the screw threads where the fuze was inserted is clearly visible.

Note that, technically, these are artillery shell fragments. However, many people would refer to it as shrapnel. Shell splinters come in all sizes, from relatively large pieces as seen in this photograph, right down to tiny shards the size of a sewing needle. All have the ability to inflict death or severe injury.
