(Dutch) English: In the center of the market square of Bruges stands the statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, who led the Bruges Matins in May 1302. Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck have often been portrayed as patriotic heroes in Belgium because of their passion for Flemish identity. They were both present at the Battle of the Golden Spurs, where a Flemish makeshift army and a motley alliance of Flemish and Namur petty nobles defeated the French army under the command of Robert II of Artois. |
