وصف قصير

Description
English: The former headquarters of the St Cuthbert's Co-operative Society, founded in 1859 by twelve local artisans and still trading under the name Scotmid. The building was deliberately sited to be near the basin of the Union Canal. The Society expanded over the next hundred years until, by 1947, it had become the city's biggest ratepayer with major outlets in the Fountainbridge and Tollcross areas, and many beyond. Increasing competition from the rise of supermarkets led to relative decline and in April 1988 demolition of the adjacent bakery and dairy complex began, opening up a large site for the private development of shops, offices and restaurants. Since this photograph was taken two new restaurants have opened on the ground floor of the building.
