English: Myxomycetes reproduce by spores, that are passively distributed through the air. In order to prevent wetting, which reduces volatility, the spore surface in many species has an ornamented surface. The mesh texture prevents the surface of the spore from getting wet especially well. In the species Lycogala epidendrum, the spores are ornamented with a dense reticulum, clearly visible under a scanning electron microscope.
