المارون وتعني الذين يعيشون على قمم الجبال (من الاٍسبانية cima: قمة) و (من الاٍنجليزية/الاٍسبانية cimarrón: هارب أو الهارب) حيث هرب العبيد في كل من الكاريبي، أمريكا الوسطى، أمريكا الجنوبية و الشمالية و شكلوا مستوطنات مستقلة جنبا إلى جنب.
