علم التأريخ Historiography، هو دراسة منهجيات المؤرخين في تطوير التاريخ كتخصص أكاديمي، وعلى المستوى الأوسع هو أي عمل تاريخي حول موضوع متخصص. يغطي علم تأريخ موضوع محدد كيفية دراسة المؤرخين لهذا الموضوع باستخدام مصادر، تقنيات، ومنهجيات نظرية متخصصة. يناقش العلماء التأريخ حسب الموضوع- مثل "تأريخ المملكة المتحدة"، "تأريخ كندا"، "تأريخ الامبراطورية البريطانية"، "تأريخ عصر صدر الإسلام"، "تأريخ الصين"- ومنهجيات وأنواع محددة، مثل التاريخ السياسي والتاريخ الاجتماعي. منذ بداية القرن التاسع عشر، مع صعود التأريخ الأكاديمي، حدث تطور للأدب التأريخي. مدى تأثر المؤرخين بمجموعاتهم وولاءاتهم- مثل ولاءهم لوطنهم- محل تساؤل.[1]

تختلف الأهداف البحثية للمؤرخين بمرور الوقت، وقد شهدت تحولاً عن التاريخ الدبلوماسي، الاقتصادي، والسياسي التقليدي إلى المنهجيات الأحدث، خاصة الدراسات الثقافية والاجتماعية. من 1975 حتى 1995، ازدادت نسبة أساتذة التاريخ في الجامعات الأمريكية والمعنية بالتاريخ الاجتماعي من 31 إلى 41 بالمائة، بينما تراجعت نسبة المؤرخين السياسيين من 40 إلى 30 بالمائة.[2] عام 2007، كان هناك 5.723 أستاذ جامعي في أقسام التاريخ بالجامعات البريطانية، 1.644 (29%) عرفوا أنفسهم كمتخصصين في التاريخ الاجتماعي و1.425 (25%) عرفوا أنفسهم كمتخصصين في التاريخ السياسي.[3]

المصطلح

في العصر الحديث المبكر، يشير مصطلح "التأريخ" إلى "كتابة التاريخ"، و"عالم التأريخ" هو "المؤرخ".

مؤخراً، يعرف علم التأريخ على أنه "دراسة الطريقة التي جرى وكُتب بها التاريخ- تاريخ الكتابة التاريخية"، مما يعني أنه، "عندما تقوم بدراسة 'علم التأريخ' فإنك لا تدرس أحداث الماضي مباشرة، لكنك تدرس تغير تفسيرات تلك الأحداث في أعمال المؤرخين."[4]
