لورنس جورج دَرِل ( Lawrence George Durrell ؛ /ˈdʊərəl,_ˈdʌrʔ/؛[1] عاش 27 فبراير 1912 – 7 نوفمبر 1990) روائي وكاتب رحلات وشاعر إنجليزي، اكتسب شهرته بفضل الروايات الأربع المتعاقبة التي تعرف باسم رباعية الإسكندرية. وتتكون هذه الرباعية من جزء جوستين الذي صدر عام (1957م)، وبالثازار الذي صدر عام (1958م)، ومونتوليف الذي صدر عام (1959م) وجزء كلي الذي صدر عام (1960م). وتتسم هذه الروايات بلغتها المنمقة وبشخصياتها غير العادية وبوصفها النابض بالحيوية للبحر الأبيض المتوسط ولمدينة الإسكندرية في مصر خلال عقد الثلاثينيات من القرن العشرين. وصف دوريل العديد من قضايا الحب، وقدمها على لسان الشخصيات الرئيسية من زوايا مختلفة، بغرض تصوير مدى صدق تجارب هذه الشخصيات.

حياته

ولد دريل في جلندهار بالهند، أرسل في سن الحادية عشر ليواصل تعليمه في بريطانيا ولكنه لم يتكيف مع الجو هناك بصورة جيدة وعمومًا لم يكن ناجحاً في التعليم الرسمي وأخفق في اختبارات القبول بجامعة كمبردج. وبعد فشله في الالتحاق بالجامعة؛ سكن في لندن، وعمل لفترة عازفاً على بيانو في ملهي ليلي قبل أن يغير رجال الشرطة على الملهي مما اضطره إلى العمل كسمسار أملاك حيث كان يجمع الإجارات إلى أن عضته كلاب عضات بشعة، وتنقل بعدها في عدة أعمال قبل أن يعمل بسلك الشرطة في جاميكا.

في 22 يناير 1935 تزوج داريل من نانسي إيزابل مايرز، وهي الزيجة الأولى من أربع زيجات له. انتقل دارل مع عائلته إلى اليونان في مارس من نفس العام. وقضى معظم حياته في شرق البحر الأبيض المتوسط. وتوضح روايته الأولى التي تدعى الكتاب الأسود والتي صدرت في عام (1938) مدى تأثره بصديقه الروائي الأمريكي هنري ميلر.


محطة صداقته مع هنري ميلر

كانت محطة صداقته للأديب الإنجليزي هنري ميلر من أهم محطات حيات. وقد بدأت هذه العلاقة عندما كتب درل إلى ميلر نقداً لروايته الشهيرة " مدار السرطان " والتي أثارت جدلاً واسعاً في المشهد الأدبي آنذاك. واعتبر ميلر أن ذلك النقد هو أذكي نقد قرأه عن روايته، ومن حينها ارتبط الكاتبان معًا بعلاقة وطيدة رغم أن ميلر يكبر درل بكثير.

وصف دارل الحياة على الجزر في اليونان وبالقرب منها في: رواية زنزانة بروسبيرو التي صدرت في عام (1945)، وفي رواية تأملات في مارتن فينوس (1953). وفي رواية الليمون المر (1957)، وفي رواية الجزر اليونانية (1978). وقدم سردًا لجولته في جزيرة صقلية في رواية عرض الفرسان الصقلي (1977). وصدر ديوان الأشعار الكاملة لدرل في عام (1980)، واحتوى هذا الديوان على كل القصائد التي كتبها درل من عام 1931 حتى عام 1974.
