According to the United States Geological Survey:[21]

The earthquake occurred as the result of motion on a northeast striking reverse fault or thrust fault on the northwestern margin of the Sichuan Basin. The earthquake’s epicenter and focal-mechanism are consistent with it having occurred as the result of movement on the Longmenshan fault or a tectonically related fault. The earthquake reflects tectonic stresses resulting from the convergence of crustal material slowly moving from the high Tibetan Plateau, to the west, against strong crust underlying the Sichuan Basin and southeastern China.

On a continental scale, the seismicity of central and eastern Asia is a result of northward convergence of the Indian Plate against the Eurasian Plate with a velocity of about 50 mm/y. The convergence of the two plates is broadly accommodated by the uplift of the Asian highlands and by the motion of crustal material to the east away from the uplifted Tibetan Plateau. The northwestern margin of the Sichuan Basin has previously experienced destructive earthquakes. The magnitude 7.5 earthquake of August 25, 1933 killed more than 9,300 people.

According to the British Geological Survey:[22]

The earthquake occurred 92 km northwest of the city of Chengdu in eastern Sichuan province and over 1500 km from Beijing, where it was also strongly felt. Earthquakes of this size have the potential to cause extensive damage and loss of life.

The epicentre was in the mountains of the Eastern Margin of Qing-Tibet Plateau at the northwest margin of the Sichuan Basin. The earthquake occurred as a result of motion on a northeast striking thrust fault that runs along the margin of the basin.

The seismicity of central and eastern Asia is caused by the northward movement of the India plate at a rate of 5cm/year and its collision with Eurasia, resulting in the uplift of the Himalaya and Tibetan plateau and associated earthquake activity. This deformation also results in the extrusion of crustal material from the high Tibetan Plateau in the west towards the Sichuan Basin and southeastern China. China frequently suffers large and deadly earthquakes. In August 1933 a magnitude 7.5 earthquake about 90 km notheast of today's earthquake destroyed the town of Diexi and surrounding villages, and caused many landslides, some of which dammed the rivers.

All highways into Wenchuan were damaged, resulting in delayed arrival of the rescue troops.[31][32] Over 2300 base stations of China Mobile in Sichuan and nearby areas went offline, while the China Unicom network in Wenchuan broke down entirely.[33][34] In Beichuan county, 80% of the buildings collapsed according to Xinhua.[35] In the city of Shifang, the collapse of two chemical plants led to leakage of some 80 tons of liquid ammonia, with hundreds of people reported buried. [36] In the city of Dujiangyan, south-east of the epicentre, a whole school collapsed with 900 students buried and 50 dead. The Juyuan middle school, where many teenagers were buried, is being excavated by civilians and cranes.[37]

According to a geophysicist with the United States Geological Survey, an earthquake of this magnitude is "very dangerous" and can cause major damage. The quake caused at least 8,500 deaths in Sichuan province according to a report at 16:10 GMT on 12 May 2008[37], but this figure may increase as more reports come in. In Chongqing, 5 students were reported killed, 20 more buried and more than 100 injured when one primary school collapsed. [41] The Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture's government[مطلوب توضيح] announced 39 people dead and 5 missing. [42] In the city of Mianyang, one person was killed by a falling water tower.[43] Xinhua reported that more than 50 students were confirmed killed and more still buried when the Juyuan high school building collapsed in Dujiangyan, the city nearest to the epicenter.[44][45] In the neighboring provinces of Shaanxi, Gansu and Chongqing, the death tolls were 57, 26 and 50 respectively.[46] Reuters cited an incomplete statistic of about 9,000 deaths in Sichuan from Sichuan Seismological Bureau as of May 12, 22:20 Beijing Time.[47]

According to the Xinhua press, the number of deaths and injuries was rising rapidly. The number of deaths rose from less than 200 to 8,533 in the official statement, and there are reportedly more than 3,000 people killed in Beichuan County.[48] As of 1700 GMT Monday (0200 local time Tuesday), Xinhua reports an estimate of over 9000 dead.[49]

China's Chengdu Military Area Command has dispatched 50,000 troops and armed police to help with disaster relief work in earthquake-stricken Wenchuan County, in the southwestern Sichuan Province[50]. However, because of the terrain of the land, and of where the epicentre of the earthquake was, the soldiers are finding it very hard to get help to the rural regions of the province.

An earthquake emergency relief team of 184 people is to leave Beijing from Nanyuan Airport in two military transport planes on Monday night to travel to quake-stricken Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The Red Cross Society of China has sent 557 tents and 2,500 quilts valued at 788,000 yuan (113,000 U.S. dollars) to Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday afternoon.

The State Disaster Relief Commission has initiated a "Level II emergency contingency plan" ( Level II emergency contingency plan covers the second most serious class of natural disasters) to cope with Monday's strong earthquake in southwest China.

The State Seismological Bureau (SSB) will send a team of 180 disaster relief personnel to the site of Monday's major earthquake in Wenchuan County in southwest China's Sichuan Province. [51].

أمام هول الزلزال الكبير الذي ضرب اقليم سشوان جنوب غرب الصين استنفرت الصين 50 الف جندي من قواتها المسلحة للعمل في الإغاثة والانقاذ في وقت هز فيه زلزال ارتدادي شدته 6,1 درجات مدينة شينجدو عاصمة الاقليم المنكوب بعد حوالي 2000 هزة ارتدادية.

وكانت آخر حصيلة لضحايا الزلزال قد تجاوزت ال 12 الف قتيل حسب المسؤول في إدارة الاغاثة من الكوارث الذي لفت الى ان اعمال الاغاثة تتعثر بسبب انقطاع طرق المواصلات وهبوب العواصف في المناطق المنكوبة .‏

وفي دلالة واضحة على خطورة الزلزال وامكانية ارتفاع عدد الضحايا أعلنت بكين امس ان 18645 شخصا دفنوا تحت الانقاض في مدينة ميان يانج المجاورة لمقاطقة دينتشوان مركز الزلزال , وبينما اكد الرئيس الصيني هوجينتاو على ان اعمال الاغاثة هي الاولوية المطلقة لحكومته وصل امس الى مركز الزلزال فريق انقاذ مؤلف من 1300 شخص من العاملين بفرق الانقاذ والاسعاف في وقت عرضت فيه تايوان وبعض الدول تقديم المساعدة للصين التي رحبت بأي مساعدة خارجية .‏

الى ذلك طلبت ادارة سلامة العمال الحكومية الصينية من جميع المنشآت الكيميائية ومناجم الفحم ايقاف كل انشطتها واجلاء موظفيها درءا لأي اخطار يمكن ان تلحق بهم وتفقد اجراءات السلامة.‏
