كربوني - Carboniferous

العصر الكربوني Carboniferous period هو قسم رئيسي في مقياس الزمن الجيولوجي ويمتد من نهاية العصر الديفوني، حوالي 359.2 ± 2.5 مليون سنة، إلى بداية العصر البرمي، نحو 299.0 ± 0.8 م س (ICS, 2004). وكمعظم الأزمنة الجيولوجية القديمة فإن الطبقات الصخرية المحددة ليداية ونهاية العصر معروفة تماماً، إلا أن التواريخ الدقيقة لتلك الطبقات تحتمل الاختلاف بمقدار 5-10 مليون سنة. واسم الكربوني أتى من الانتشار الواسع لطبقات الفحم من هذا العصر في غرب اوروبا. الأشجار الإبرية Conifer ظهرت في هذا العصر الهام والمعروف.

Paleogeography

الانخفاض العالمي لمنسوب سطح البحر في نهاية العصر الديفوني انقلب في مطلع العصر الكربوني; مما خلق البحار حول جميع القارات وترك رواسب كربونات في العصر الميسيسيبي.

كان فيه بداية ظهور الزواحف وزيادة عدد الأسماك حيث ظهر 200 نوع من القروش. ثم ظهرت الحشرات المجنحة العملاقة وأشجار السرخس الكبيرة. وفي طبقته الصخرية ظهر الفحم الحجري وبقايا النباتات الزهرية بالغابات الشاسعة التي كانت أشجارها غارقة بالمياه التي كانت تغطي أراضيها. فظهرت أشجار السرخس الطويلة وبعض الطحالب كانت كأشجار تعلو. وكانت حشرة اليعسوب عملاقة وكان لها أربعة أجنحة طول كل منها متراً. وكانت الضفادع في حجم العجل وبعضها له 3 عيون وكانت العين الثالثة فوق قمة الرأس وتظل مفتوحة للحراسة.

Early Carboniferous land plants were very similar to those of the preceding Late Devonian, but new groups also appeared at this time.

حياة الفطريات

Because plants and animals were growing in size and abundance in this time (e.g., Lepidodendron), land fungi diversified further. Marine fungi still occupied the oceans.

حوادث انقراض

The Middle Carboniferous extinction event is shown here as Middle C.

In the middle Carboniferous, an extinction event occurred that was probably caused by climate change. A less intense extinction event also occurred at the end of Carboniferous.
