الإنتخابات هي إحدى عمليات لصنع القرار التي يتم فيها الإختيار من ضمن مجموعة من المرشحين لشغل منصب معين من مناصب الدولة وتتم عملية الإختيار من قبل الشعب. وتعتبر الإنتخابات هي الطريقة التي تتبعها الدول الديمقراطية حديثا لشغل الوظائف في الدولة سواء كانت وظائف سياسية أو وظائف خدمية. وتتبع بعض القطاعات الخاصات نظام الإنتخاب لشغل وظائفها خاصة عندما يتعلق الأمر بالمناصب القيادية في تلك القطاعات. ولكل بلد قانون إنتخابي ينظم سير العمليات الإنتخابية فيه وفقا لما يوافق عليه الدستور. ^[1]

في معظم الأنظمة السياسية الديمقراطية ، نجد أنواع مختلفة من الإنتخابات ، تبعا لأنظمة الحكومية المختلفة داخل الدولة الواحدة ، ومن أشهر تلك الأنواع:
